Wearing hearing aids can be an adjustment, both physically and socially. In order to maximize the benefits of your device, let’s discuss a few of the ways you can feel confident wearing your hearing aids in any situation.
Get Comfortable with Your Hearing Aids
Select the Right Fit
When you first get your hearing aids you go through a fitting process with your audiologist. The right fit is essential to ensuring your hearing aids are both comfortable and effective.
Be as open as you can during this process. If something feels painful, let your audiologist know so they can make any needed adjustments.
Start Slow
Sounds might seem overly loud or high-pitched when you get a new pair of hearing aids. This is normal. Your ears aren’t used to picking up on certain sounds or hearing with this kind of amplification. Try having one-on-one conversations in a quiet setting with your partner or friend before going to louder environments.
Be Consistent
Wearing your device regularly is the best way to get used to hearing with them. Though you might be tempted to take them out if sounds feel overwhelming, that will hurt your progress in the long run. Only take your hearing aids out if you are sleeping or if they will be exposed to water (such as when you’re in the shower.)
Reach Out to Your Hearing Professional
If you feel like you can’t wear your hearing aids because sounds are just too uncomfortable, contact your hearing professional. They can make adjustments to improve sound quality and enhance your comfort as you adjust to your new way of hearing.
Hearing Aids and Social Stigma
Sometimes it’s not physical discomfort that leads people to not wear their hearing aids, but rather social pressure. Unfortunately, the stigma around hearing loss and hearing aids is still prevalent.
Studies have shown that hearing loss stigma is strongly associated with feelings of altered self-perception.
You may worry that others will view you as old or less able if they find out you have hearing loss or need hearing aids. Reframing the stigma can help both yourself and others view hearing aids in a more positive light.
The next time you’re out for a latte at Zen Coffee Company and someone notices your hearing aids, proudly acknowledge them. Talk about the features you enjoy, like their Bluetooth™ capabilities. By focusing on the positives, you’ll feel more confident when wearing your device.
